Erasmus+ Mobility for Teaching at:

Conservatorio di Musica “Umberto Giordano”, Foggia

From March 23rd to March 27th 2026, I had a unique opportunity to teach at Conservatorio di Musica “Umberto Giordano” in Foggia, Italy. This is the first collaboration between our two institutions which was initiated by Professor Nicola Monopoli, who is also Coordinator of the PhD in Electroacoustic Composition, Sonic Arts, and Intermedia Applications at the Conservatory.

My teaching activities included a lecture and a workshop with students of Compositions and Sonic Arts. The main topic of my lecture was about artistic research and compositional techniques in my music with the special emphasis on my electroacoustic pieces. I talked about which compositional strategies and techniques of 20th and 21st centuries had the most significant influence on my work and analyzed several compositions of mine that explore the compatibility of my original music with music of different composers, styles and genres, pointing out the synthesis of different musical genres (such as blues, jazz, ethno, standard dances etc). I emphasized the numerous possibilities of using quotations, paraphrases and simulations in contemporary music in general, as well as in my selected compositions, which demonstrate diversity, cross-genre approaches and polystylism.

The workshop was planned as a group session with their master’s and doctoral students of Sonic Arts, Instrumental and Electroacoustic Composition where I had the opportunity to comment on the works they presented, to learn about the specifics of their creative process and to help them by providing advice and support for future projects. I found this kind of public student work presentations very helpful and beneficial so I will maintain this practice in the framework of my teaching process at the Faculty of Music.

During my mobility, my hosts and me immersed ourselves in comparing the curricula of our institutions aiming to pave the way for future mobility opportunities for both students and staff. Additionally, we exchanged experiences and information about organizing festivals and concerts that feature student compositions as well as the possibility and the importance of collaboration between composers and musicologists, music writers and performers.

My stay in Foggia was very fulfilling and pleasant. I’m extremely satisfied with the students’ feedback and the interaction I had with them. A special thanks to Professor Nicola Monopoli for his assistance and organizational skills, which made my visit and stay in Foggia incredibly smooth. He was so kind to show me, not only the cultural landmarks in Foggia, but also in his hometown of Barletta. I’m definitely looking forward to future collaborations.
