Beginning of education in the field of arts in Serbia
University of arts in Belgrade unites four arts faculties – Faculty of music arts, Faculty
of fine arts, Faculty of drama arts and Faculty of applied arts. First community of these
institutions was formed on 10 June 1957, when the People’s Assembly of the People’s Republic
of Serbia adopted a Law on Arts academy, as the community of arts academies. Two decades
later, on 21 May 1973, art academies grow into faculties of arts, and Arts academy becomes
University of arts, the second independent University of Belgrade.
Sole faculties of the University have somewhat longer tradition.
High arts education starts with the establishment of first high education schools – on 31
March 1937 a Regulation was adopted on formation of Music academy (with drama section) and
Arts academy (on which disciplines of fine arts were studied), members of expert commissions
were named and creation of educational plans and programs was initiated, choice of
educational human resources and preparations for admittance of first generation of students
in the fall of 1937. By their foundation, these two high education schools were crowned by
efforts of many engaged persons who worked on the establishment of arts education in our
country.
From first ideas about arts schools (Dimitrije Jovanovic in 1845 on foundation of “Lively
place of teaching”, private musical school of Milan Milovuk worked as a part of Belgrade
singing society since 1853, and Acting school Aleks Bocvanski as a part of the National
Theatre in Belgrade which began to work 1869) until the formation of high educational
institutions a long path of development of arts pedagogy was crossed and significant results
were made. Continual work was achieved only when Serbian drawing and painting school
founded in 1895 (in 1905 it changes its name and becomes Arts-craftsmanship school), Mokranjac
Serbian musical school founded in 1899 and musical school “Stankovic” founded in 1911.
They are joined after First World War by Arts school and State theatre school with acting
and ballet sections.
Aiming to develop film creativity, Committee for cinematography and the Presidency of the
Government of Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia on the 5th of May 1947, adopts a
decision for creation of High education school for film acting and directing. By the end
of 1948 (26 November), Academy of applied arts was founded. Academy of theatre arts was
founded by the Regulation of the government of FPRY on 11 December 1948. At the time, the
Musical academy intensively developed where new sections where founded and the number of
students increased.
In 1950, government of FPRY adopts a decision on joining the Academy of theater arts and High
education school for film acting and directing into Academy of theater arts. From 22 December
1962 the Academy of theatre arts changed its name to Academy of theatre, film, radio and
television, and in 1973 it changed to Faculty of drama arts.
University of arts in Belgrade promotes today artistic creativity and diversity as a brand
of national culture of Serbia. With a wide specter of study programs from art fields, its
educational human resources, as well as the artwork, University of arts in Belgrade still
represents a cultural center beyond of the borders of the Balkans. As a part of Bologna
educational process, we will contribute to development of European university of arts
education.

rectors, forming the body of Rectorate.
