University of Music and Performing Arts Graz
During the sixth semester of my Bachelor’s studies, I had the opportunity to spend a semester abroad at the Kunstuniversität Graz. Being passionate about jazz, studying at Europe’s well respected jazz institution was a true privilege and honor.
Arguable the best part of my time in Graz was studying under Julian Arguelles. As a self taught musician from a very young age, his approach to playing and practicing became very unique and covered a wide range of expertise. His musicality, depth of knowledge, and experience as a solo artist, guest musician for other projects, as well as former Big Band saxophonist, luckily enough playing for my personal favorite radio Big Band – hr-Frankfurt Radio Big Band. He had a way of encouraging me to think more critically, listen more attentively, and commit more fully to the process of growing as an artist, focusing on long term planning and reaching your full potential.
Adapting to a “new life” in Graz was neither hard nor long. The community at the university was incredibly open and welcoming, and I found myself surrounded by talented musicians from all over the region.
The university itself offers impressive resources: practice rooms, rehearsal spaces, and a rich selection of ensembles and classes that go deep into various jazz styles. Compared to my home university in Belgrade, the curriculum in Graz felt broader and more specialized, with more students focused entirely on jazz. I especially appreciated many regular masterclasses which the faculty organized multiple times times a month with world class musicians attending, while in Belgrade something like that would happen maybe once a year.
Living in Graz also taught me a lot outside of music. Adjusting to a different culture, and building a new social circle helped me grow in confidence and independence.
Looking back, I can say this exchange semester was one of the most rewarding parts of my studies so far. It challenged me, inspired me, and opened my eyes to new ways of thinking about music and life, on a personal and professional level as well. I would absolutely encourage other students to apply for a semester in Graz.
